| Iro: This conversation takes place on a Greek ferry. |
| Judith: The conversation is between a German woman, Rhea, and Alexis. |
| Iro: The speakers don’t know each other, therefore they will be speaking formal Greek. |

| Αντρ: Με συγχωρείτε, μήπως ξέρετε πότε θα φτάσουμε στο Ηράκλειο; |
| Ρ: Σε δύο ώρες περίπου. |
| Αλ: Στο Ηράκλειο πηγαίνετε; |
| Αντρ: Ναι. Θα δουλέψω σε ένα φροντιστήριο. Είμαι καθηγήτρια γερμανικών. Με λένε Αντρέα. |
| Ρ: Χαίρω πολύ, εγώ είμαι η Ρέα και από ‘δω ο αδερφός μου ο Αλέξης. |

| Man: No, I come every year. I like it very much. I will stay in Iraklion for one year, and then I'll see. You? |

| Judith: Okay, maybe you should learn a bit about the city that they’re about to arrive in. |
| Iro: Heraklion is the largest city in Crete. It is the hometown of many famous people, such as the painter El Greco, Domico Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος, and the author Νίκος Καζαντζάκης. |
| Judith: Although Heraklion is also a modern city, it is famous for its archeological treasures. If you visit Greece, you must not miss the ruins of Κνωσσός, the center of the ancient Minoan civilization, and the archeological museum there. |
| Iro: In Heraklion, visitors can also admire many building from the Venetian and the Ottoman eras. |
| Judith: For example, the Venetian Harbor, the Venetian Logia and the Ottoman Vezir Mosque. |
| Iro: Heraklion is a very popular tourist destination, so you can easily get there by ferry or by airplane. It is also connected to other cities of Crete by road. |

| Judith: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Iro: The first word we'll look at is χαίρω πολύ. |
| Judith: This is a phrase that you’ll hear a lot when meeting new people. It literally means “I’m very happy”, but the implication is “I'm happy to meet you”. “Nice to meet you” would be the English equivalent. It’s a standard phrase so make sure to memorize it. |
| Iro: Δω is the short form of εδώ. In colloquial Greek, quite a few words are shortened, and this is one of the most common short forms. |
| Judith: As you learn more and more Greek, we will gradually bring in more colloquialisms. It is important to understand the standard language first so that you know which syllables are dropped. |
| Iro: This lesson featured three irregular Aorist stems. The strangest one is φάω, which is the Aorist stem for τρώω. |

| Iro: There’s also πιω, the Aorist stem for πίνω. |
| Judith: To drink. |
| Iro: And βρω, the Aorist stem for βρίσκω. |

Lesson focus |

| Judith: The focus of this lesson is the simple future tense. The Aorist is unavoidable in Greek. It appears in many situations in everyday language, not just after να. Today we shall learn a second use for it - the simple future tense. |
| Iro: You know that the future tense is normally formed by adding θα in front of the verb? Really easy, right? What we didn’t tell you previously is there are actually two future tenses in Greek - the continuous future tense and the symbol future tense. |
| Judith: What you’ve been using so far is the continuous future tense which describes long lasting plans. |
| Iro: For that you combine θα in the regular present tense with the normal word stem like θα φτάνω or θα γράφεις. |
| Judith: For the simple future tense you combine θα and the Aorist stem forms, the same forms that you’ve already seen after να. The result is something like… |
| Iro: Θα φτάσω. |
| Judith: Or… |
| Iro: Θα γράψεις. |
