| Judith: Ok, let’s talk a little bit about the sources of Greek mythology. What are these stories? |
| Iro: The stories are about the life and adventures of the Gods, heroes and mythical creatures, titans, nibs, nesses, etc., and display the origin of the world. At first, they were narrated and existed only in the oral tradition. |
| Judith: The first written documents are Homer’s epic poems: “The Iliad” and “The Odyssey” which are about the Trojan War and also the poems of “Hesiod” which are about the origin of the world and the genealogy of the Gods. |
| Iro: Others are poems about the epic cycle, lyric poems, tragedies from the fifth century before Christ and documents of the poets of the Hellenistic and Roman period. |
| Judith: Monuments found in Μεσσήνη and Crete give archeological evidence for some information about Gods and heroes. |
| Iro: We can also see Sphinx from Greek mythology depicted in poetry from the eighth century before Christ. |
| Judith: In Greece, children are taught mythology starting in the third grade, at about nine years old. In high school, they studied “The Odyssey” and “The Iliad”, but not in the original language. Let’s take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson. The first word we shall see is? |

| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Iro: The first phrase we’ll look at is βγάζω φωτογραφία. |
| Judith: In Greek, you don’t take a photo, you’ll take it out or pull it out. The verb is βγάζω, and the expression is… |
| Iro: Βγάζω μία φωτογραφία. Παίρνω τη μαμά. |
| Judith: Literally means: “I’m taking my mom.”, but the meaning is: “I’m calling mom.” Somehow, παίρνω - “to take”, has become the most common verb for “to call on the phone”, even if you’re the one who is calling. |
| Iro: The suffix πωλείο is used to create words for shops. In this dialogue, we had βιβλιοπωλείο. |
| Judith: Bookshop. |
| Iro: Another example is κρεοπωλείο. |
| Judith: “Meat shop” or “the butcher’s shop”. |
| Iro: Παιδί μου |
| Judith: Literally means: “my child”, no matter the age. |
| Iro: It is often used in the same friendly context as: ρε and μωρέ. |
Lesson focus |

| Judith: The focus of this lesson is the declension of three, four, thirteen, fourteen, and so on. The numbers three and four are special in that they behave like adjectives in Greek. |
| Iro: That is you have to adjust them according to the noun gender and case. |
| Judith: The same goes for every number ending in three or four. For example, 13, 14, 23, 24, 33, 34, or even larger numbers such as 1503 and 864. |
| Iro: For masculine words, three is τρεις and four is τέσσερις. |
| Judith: For feminine nouns, three and four have the same form as for masculine. This is highly unusual when it comes to Greek adjectives. |
| Iro: Finally, for neuter, three is τρία and four is τέσσερα. So, they’re imitating a neuter noun plural like βιβλία. |
| This also the formed used when counting. You say: ένα, δύο, τρεις, τέσσερις, πέντε. |
| Judith: All of these behave like plural adjectives since these numbers are only ever used with plural nouns. |
| Iro: This also means that you’ll strange forms like δεκατεσσάρων.. |
| Judith: Of fourteen. |
| Iro: For the Genitive. |
| Judith: The ων ending is hard to miss. Then, again, you won’t often have to use this forms. They would be oddly out common if not for the Greek habit of talking about ones age in the Genitive. |
| Iro: You might ask: Πόσων χρονών είσαι; |
| Judith: How many years are you?” or literally: “Of how many years are you? |
| Iro: And the answer would be in the Genitive: είμαι δεκατεσσάρων χρονών. |

| Judith: “I am of 14 years old.” That just does it for today. |
