| Judith: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Iro: The first phrase we’ll look at is τηγανητές πατάτες. |
| Judith: Literally, “fried potatoes”. They are what the Greeks called French fries. We’ve now seen three words referring to one’s mother in Greek. Can you explain them, what is the difference? |
| Iro: For one there is μητέρα simple meaning one’s mother and it’s not very affectionate. “Mama” is the equivalent of “mom”, so it’s affectionate. And there is μάνα which is also affectionate but somewhat old fashioned. Δεν μπορώ άλλο. |
| Judith: Literally, “I cannot other”. It is used in this dialogue to express frustration. Literally, “I cannot other”, akin to the English expression Í can’t take it any longer”. |
| Iro: Μωρέ |
| Judith: Μωρέ actually means “moron” or “fool”. But in Greek people of all ages often call each other μωρέ in a playful way. |
| Iro: Μην ασχολείσαι literally means “don’t occupy yourself”, and could be translated as “don’t worry”. This dialogue is full of useful colloquial expressions, but μην ασχολείσαι is the most useful of them. Be sure to remember it. |

| Judith: The focus of this lesson is the declension of ποιος, literally means “who” or “which”, but this doesn’t prevent it from being declined just like any Greek word ending in ος. After all English has word like “whose’ and “whom” as well. |
