| Iro: The speakers are siblings, therefore they will be speaking informal Greek. |
| Judith: Let’s listen to the conversation. Okay, what is this about smoking? Is it really as bad as I hear? |

| Narrator: Ο Αλέξης και η Ρέα είναι στο δωμάτιό τους και μαλώνουν. |
| Ρ: Έλα ρε Αλέξη! Γιατί παίρνεις συνέχεια το δικό μου σαμπουάν; |
| Α: Πώς κάνεις έτσι; Ξέχασα το δικό μου. |

| A: You're very irritated [have a lot of nerves] today. Hey, what are you doing? Are you drinking my coffee? |
| Ρ: Αυτός είναι ο δικός μου καφές, αυτός εκεί είναι ο δικός σου. Δεν μπορώ άλλο, τελευταία φορά που πάμε κάπου μαζί. |
| R: This is my coffee; that there is yours. I can't take this anymore [I can't other], [this is the] last time we go somewhere together. |

| A: I can't take anymore either; you're always irritated. And yesterday you sent a message from my cell phone! |

| R: Only once! Where are you going now? Is this your lighter? And the cigarettes? Alexis, are you smoking again? The doctor... |

| A: Stop! You're not my mother! |
| POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
| Iro: Greece is among the top tobacco consuming countries in Europe. |
| Judith: How about in the workplaces, taxis and the like, is it allowed there? |
| Iro: In workplaces, taxis and stations, the smoke is banned. It is also used to be banned in restaurants, café and bars. However the owners protested that business was not as good as after the smoking ban. So, in most of these places smoking is still allowed. |
| Judith: I also hear that smoking is allowed in the Athens airport, but only in two special compartments with ventilation systems. |
| Iro: Yes, this is true. Greeks usually start smoking at a very young age. Tobacco products can be easily found in every shop. And it is not against the law to sell to people who are under 18. |
| Judith: Wow… |
| Iro: Yes and women have higher rates of smoking than men. |
| Judith: That’s amazing. Well, I imagine it is hard to regulate because Greece is full of open air cafés, so people sit outside and you really can’t ban smoking when they’re sitting outside. |
| Iro: Yes, this is true. This makes it difficult to crack down on smoking. |

| Judith: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Iro: The first phrase we’ll look at is πως κάνεις έτσι – literally means “how are you doing this?” In this context you would probably translate it as “why are you like that?” Πολλά νεύρα έχεις σήμερα. |
| Judith: This means, “you are every irritated today, aren’t you?” What is the base expression here? |
| Iro: The base expression is έχω νεύρα. |
| Judith: To have nerves. This means to be irritated or grouchy in Greek. |
| Iro: Όλο νεύρα είσαι. |
| Judith: It’s similar. It means “you’re always irritated”. So, in fact, there is no difference between having nerves or being nerves. Both mean to be irritated in Greek. |

| Judith: The focus of this lesson is the expression το δικό μου. Today we’ll talk about the typical Greek construction - το δικό μου. This expression is used to say “my own” or “mine” emphatically. For example, “Why do you always take my car?” |
| Iro: Γιατί παίρνεις συνέχεια το δικό μου αυτοκίνητο; |
| Judith: Or “I have my own, where is yours?| |
| Iro: Έχω το δικό μου, πού είναι το δικό σου; |
| Judith: To create this kind of construction, you first have to find the appropriate article and adjective ending to use on δικό. |
| Iro: The result could be ο δικός μου, η δική μου, τα δικά μου or other forms, depending on the noun that you’re referring to. |
| Judith: After that you put the normal possessive pronoun μου, σου, του and so on. However, you don’t need the possessive pronoun after the noun anymore. Using it once is enough. |
| Iro: So, on the whole something, like η πετσέτα μου might change to η δική μου πετσέτα. |
