| Judith: Let’s listen to the conversation. Okay, what about universities in Greece? |

| Narrator: Η Ρέα, και η Κατερίνα κάθονται στο ίδιο τραπέζι. Ο Αλέξης κάθεται με τους φίλους του. |
| Ν: Α, η Ελένη και η Κατερίνα! Τι κάνετε; |
| Κ: Γεια σου Ρέα, γεια σου Ναταλία! |
| Ε: Καλά είμαστε! Ρέα! Τι κάνεις; Όλα καλά; Τη Ναταλία τη βλέπουμε πού και πού, αλλά εσένα ποτέ. |
| Ρ: Ήμουν στο εξωτερικό, σπούδαζα στην Ελβετία. Μετά, δούλευα σε ένα ωδείο αλλά τώρα δε δουλεύω πια. Τα λεφτά ήταν πολύ λίγα. |

| Narrator: Rea and Katerina are sitting at the same table. Alexis is sitting with his friends. |

| N: Ah, Eleni and Katerina! How are you? |
| Κ: Γεια σου Ρέα, γεια σου Ναταλία! |
| K: Hello, Rea; hello, Natalia! |

| E: We're well! Rea! How are you? Everything okay? We see Natalia here and there, but never you. |
| Ρ: Ήμουν στο εξωτερικό, σπούδαζα στην Ελβετία. Μετά, δούλευα σε ένα ωδείο αλλά τώρα δε δουλεύω πια. Τα λεφτά ήταν πολύ λίγα. |
| R: I was abroad, I was studying in Switzerland. Afterward, I was working at a conservatory, but now I'm not working [there] anymore. The pay wasn't very good. [The money was very little.] |
| Ε: Ναι, ξέρω... Και η Κατερίνα δούλευε στο ωδείο πριν από τρία χρόνια. |
| E: Yes, I know… Katerina also used to work at the Conservatory three years ago. |
| Κ: Ναι, μετά ήμουν για ένα χρόνο σε μία Ορχήστρα. Στην αρχή, περνούσα πολύ ωραία και ταξίδευα αρκετά. Πήγαινα σε πολλές χώρες. Μετά όμως δεν είχα χρόνο με το μωρό. |
| K: Yes, afterward I was in an orchestra for a year. At the beginning, I was having a very nice time and was traveling quite a lot. I went to many countries. But then I didn't have time with the baby. |
| Ρ: Κατάλαβα... Και τώρα τι κάνεις; |
| R: I understand [understood]… And what do you do now? |
| Κ: Τώρα δουλεύω σε ένα σχολείο. Εσύ; |
| K: Now I'm working at a school. You? |
| Ρ: Δουλεύω σε ένα πιάνο μπαρ. |
| R: I'm working at a piano bar. |
| Ν: Τι μουσική παίζεις; |
| N: What music do you play? |

| POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
| Iro: The majority of Greek students wish to continue their studies at the Greek university or one abroad. The different establishments are universities, polytechnic schools, technology institution and an open education. In Greece, education is free so students don’t have to pay tuition, although sometimes they have to pay for their books. |
| Judith: The programs last from four to six years or six years for medical schools. Students can continue their studies in order to get a master’s degree or PhD. |
| Iro: In Greece, there are many American and British colleges. Students can follow a four year cycle of study in order to get a bachelor’s degree. But this kind of degree is not considered equal to the one they can earn at the Greek university or one abroad. |
| Judith: Many Greek students go abroad for their university studies. The most popular countries are the UK, Italy, France, Bulgaria and Romania. However, a university degree does not protect people from unemployment. Let’s take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson. |

| Judith: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for the some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Iro: The first phrase we we’ll look at is που και που |
| Judith: This Greek expression is akin to the English here and there, literally you are saying where and where. |
| Iro: Είχα is the past tense of έχω. |
| Judith: The stem is irregular. However, the endings are exactly the same as the ones that we shall discuss in today’s grammar lesson. |
| Iro: Σαξόφωνο is the Greek word for “saxophone”. And τζαζ is what we call “jazz”. |
| Judith: Note that the Greek people have a lot of trouble pronouncing the “J” sound in “jazz’ or “jungle’ because that sound doesn’t exist in Greek. Greeks tend to replace it with τζ they replace sh with S. One of the hardest names for a Greek person to say is George Bush. |

| Judith: The focus of this lesson is the regular past tense in the singular. Today we shall start learning the past tense for regular verbs. Let’s just look at the singular endings, because, well, we’ve covered a lot of new grounds in the last few lessons and we should take it easy for a bit. |
| Iro: The endings are α for I, ες for you, singular, and ε for he/she/it. |
| Judith: Can you give us an example of these forms with a verb? How about σπουδάζω “to study” for an example? |
| Iro: Okay. The singular past tense for the verb σπουδάζω are σπούδαζα. |
| Judith: I studied. |
| Iro: Σπούδαζες. |
| Judith: “You studied”, singular. |
| Iro: Σπούδαζε. |
| Judith: “He/she/it studied”. When it comes to a regular verbs that end with άω, like μιλάω, adding the α immediately to the stem would be confusing. |
| Iro: So instead this first gets ους and then the same endings as σπουδάζω. Μιλούσα. |
| Judith: I spoke. |
| Iro: Μιλούσες. |
| Judith: “You spoke”, singular. |
| Iro: Μιλούσε. |
