Peter: Now, Becky, let’s talk language learning fears. |
Becky: Alright! |
Peter: What’s on the list? What are our listeners truly terrified of? |
Becky: The first one is... “I’m afraid I’m not good enough to speak. I freeze up.” |
Peter: Listeners, do you feel like you’re not good enough to speak yet? |
Becky: It’s a pretty common fear... that learners have. |
Peter: Well, here’s how you overcome it. |
Becky: Step one - the best way to get good at speaking is to start speaking from day 1. |
Peter: So if you’re holding yourself back... |
Becky: ...because you think you’re not good enough... that you’re making a mistake. |
Peter: That’s exactly why you’re not improving. |
Becky: You need to open your mouth and start talking! But if you’re wondering what to say... |
Peter: ..Here’s step two. In our lessons, you get the exact phrases and scripts for introducing yourself... |
Becky: ...making small talk, ordering food, expressing opinions, and much more! |
Peter: So, if you don’t know what to say, the lessons will give you the exact lines to say. |
Becky: Or step three: Learn with your own teacher with our Premium PLUS plan. |
Peter: That’s right, Becky. Listeners, with Premium PLUS, you get an actual native-speaking teacher to tell you what to say... |
Becky: ...how to say it... |
Peter: ...so you truly do learn to speak with the help of a real native teacher. |
Becky: Fear number two is... “I’m afraid I’ll never be fluent” Oh, I felt this one. |
Peter: Me too. I used to worry about that one too. |
Becky: Really? |
Peter: Well, only as a beginner. Listeners, once you start improving and seeing progress... this fear goes quickly away. |
Becky: Did you feel it when you were learning Japanese? |
Peter:. Many years ago, Becky. I questioned myself. I questioned the books I was using. I wondered if I was learning the right way. |
Becky: And then? |
Peter: Well, It’s funny because the longer I kept at it, the better my Japanese become. And, I stopped worrying about fluency. So, it’s just a matter of putting in time and sticking with it. |
Becky: So, how can our listeners overcome this? How did you stick with it? |
Peter: First, set small, specific goals. Fluency is a very big, vague goal. |
Becky: That’s very true. |
Peter: Becky, what is fluency? There are over one million words in the English language and we use about 2,000. |
Becky: So listeners, you should focus on smaller goals. |
Peter: For example set a goal like... being able to introduce yourself or having a 5-minute conversation. Something you can measure so you know you reached it. |
Becky: Because you can’t really measure fluency. It’s a pretty vague goal, as Peter said. |
Peter: And Becky, at the end of the day, it’s just a matter of time. Getting good at a language simply is an equation of time put in. |
Becky: Listeners, simply put, the longer you stick with learning a language... the better you get. |
Peter: And that’s a guarantee. Okay Becky, what’s the third fear? |
Becky: The third fear is... “I’m afraid that I’m not actually learning or making progress.” |
Peter: If you’re afraid you’re not making progress, there are 4 things you can do right now. |
Becky: First, review. Most people make this mistake. They hear a new phrase... |
Peter: ...and they think hearing it once was enough. So, when they forget what they’ve learned... |
Becky: ..they get worried that they’re not learning anything. Or that the lessons just don’t not work. |
Peter: But the truth is... You have to review again and again to truly master something. |
Becky: Second, use the dashboard to track your progress. If you need numbers to believe it... |
Peter: ...our dashboard tracks your progress and gives you dynamic reports. |
Becky: Third, try a harder lesson on the site. Now, you won’t understand it at first... |
Peter: ...but you will in minutes. Our lessons come with line-by-line translations... |
Becky: ...and our teachers explain every single word. THEN, you’ll be making progress... |
Peter: ...because you now understand something you didn’t minutes ago. |
Becky: Fourth... learn 1-on-1 with a teacher.... |
Peter: ...which you can do with our Premium PLUS plan. |
Becky: They will personally review your progress and fix your mistakes... |
Peter: ...and make sure that you’re improving. Actually, having a native speaker or a teacher .... |
Becky: ...is the BEST way to know if you’re making progress. |
Peter: There’s nothing better than a native speaker telling you “wow, you’re getting good.” |
Becky: The fourth fear is... “I’m afraid of not understanding anything I hear.” |
Peter: This is very common. You hear advanced grammar and vocabulary and it goes completely over your head. |
Becky: That’s my biggest fear, Peter. |
Peter: Now, to beat this ... if you’re taking an advanced lesson, read along. Reading along with our line-by-line dialogue is the best way to instantly understand advanced conversations. |
Becky: What about in real-life situations? |
Peter: For real-life situations, learn useful phrases like “excuse me, can you say it slower?,” or “can you say it in simpler words?” or even “I don’t understand.” |
Becky: There’s nothing wrong with saying that you didn’t understand. Or with asking for help. |
Peter: You know, Becky, when I first started learning a language, I used to fake it a lot. I didn’t want them to stop speaking so I would say that I understood something that I didn’t. |
Becky: I do that too. |
Peter: And that’s not the best way to learn. |
Becky: Yeah, I sometimes get caught in the mistake as well so... that’s embarrassing. These are the top 4 fears. But tell us listeners... |
Peter:... what language learning fears do you have? |
Becky: Leave us a comment in the comment section! And if you want to finally master your language... |
