INTRODUCTION
John: Hi everyone, I'm John.
Chrissi: And I'm Chrissi.
John: And welcome to Must-Know Greek Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 8. Using Prepositions of Place.
John: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for giving the location of something.
PATTERN
John: For example,
John: "The vase is on the table."
Chrissi: Το βάζο είναι στο τραπέζι. (To vázo íne sto trapézi.)
Chrissi: [slow] Το βάζο είναι στο τραπέζι. (To vázo íne sto trapézi.)
John: The pattern for giving the location of something has three elements. First, the neuter noun phrase in the nominative meaning "the vase".
Chrissi: Το βάζο (To vázo).
John: Second, the verb "to be" in the 3rd person singular meaning "is".
Chrissi: είναι (íne).
John: Third, the neuter prepositional phrase in the accusative meaning "on the table".
Chrissi: στο τραπέζι (sto trapézi).
John: Altogether, we have... "The vase is on the table."
Chrissi: Το βάζο είναι στο τραπέζι. (To vázo íne sto trapézi.) [slow] Το βάζο είναι στο τραπέζι. (To vázo íne sto trapézi.) [normal] Το βάζο είναι στο τραπέζι. (To vázo íne sto trapézi.)
John: Start by mentioning your subject with a noun phrase in the nominative that will usually consist of a pronoun or an article followed by a noun or a name. Then use the verb "to be" in the person and number that agrees with your subject. Finally, use an adverbial that denotes location. In Greek, adverbials can be single adverbs, like "up" or "down"; or phrases such as adverbial phrases or prepositional phrases.
Chrissi: Adverbial phrases consist of an adverb plus other words. Prepositional phrases consist of a preposition plus an adverb or a noun phrase, usually in the accusative case. While the genitive case may be necessary in some cases, the nominative case is quite rare after a preposition.
Chrissi: Το βάζο είναι στο τραπέζι. (To vázo íne sto trapézi.)
John: So remember, to give the location of something, start with a noun phrase in the nominative as your subject followed by the verb "to be" in the correct form and then use an adverbial that denotes location.
John: Here is another example meaning, "The books are inside the school bag." First, the neuter noun phrase in the nominative meaning "the books".
Chrissi: Τα βιβλία (Ta vivlía).
John: Second, the verb "to be" in the 3rd person plural meaning "are".
Chrissi: είναι (íne).
John: Third, the adverbial phrase consisting of an adverb + a feminine prepositional phrase in the accusative meaning "inside the schoolbag".
Chrissi: μέσα στη σάκα (mésa sti sáka).
John: Altogether we have...
Chrissi: Τα βιβλία είναι μέσα στη σάκα. (Ta vivlía íne mésa sti sáka.) [slow] Τα βιβλία είναι μέσα στη σάκα. (Ta vivlía íne mésa sti sáka.) [normal] Τα βιβλία είναι μέσα στη σάκα. (Ta vivlía íne mésa sti sáka.)
John: "The books are inside the schoolbag."
[pause]
Chrissi: Τα βιβλία είναι μέσα στη σάκα. (Ta vivlía íne mésa sti sáka.)
John: How do you say - "The milk is in the fridge." To give you a hint, "in the fridge" is...
Chrissi: στο ψυγείο (sto psiyío). [slow] στο ψυγείο (sto psiyío). [normal] στο ψυγείο (sto psiyío).
John: "The milk is in the fridge."
[pause]
Chrissi: Το γάλα είναι στο ψυγείο. (To gála íne sto psiyío.) [slow] Το γάλα είναι στο ψυγείο. (To gála íne sto psiyío.) [normal] Το γάλα είναι στο ψυγείο. (To gála íne sto psiyío.)
[pause]
Chrissi: Το γάλα είναι στο ψυγείο. (To gála íne sto psiyío.)

John: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will tell you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in Greek. Here we go.
