| John: And welcome to Must-Know Greek Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 7. Asking About Location or Position. |
| John: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about location or position. |
| PATTERN |
| John: For example, |
| John: "Where is the bridge located?" |
| Chrissi: Πού βρίσκεται η γέφυρα; (Pú vrískete i yéfira?) |
| Chrissi: [slow] Πού βρίσκεται η γέφυρα; (Pú vrískete i yéfira?) |
| John: The pattern for asking about location or position has three elements. First, we have the interrogative adverb meaning "where". |
| Chrissi: Πού (Pú). |
| John: Second, we have the verb "to be located" in the 3rd person singular meaning "is located". |
| Chrissi: βρίσκεται (vrískete). |
| John: Third, we have the feminine noun phrase in the nominative meaning "the bridge". |
| Chrissi: η γέφυρα; (i yéfira). |
| John: Altogether, we have... "Where is the bridge located?" |
| Chrissi: Πού βρίσκεται η γέφυρα; (Pú vrískete i yéfira?) [slow] Πού βρίσκεται η γέφυρα; (Pú vrískete i yéfira?) [normal] Πού βρίσκεται η γέφυρα; (Pú vrískete i yéfira?) |
| John: Asking where someone or something is in Greek has the same structure as in English. |
| Chrissi: We start with the interrogative adverb πού (pú) meaning "where." What follows is a verb such as the verb βρίσκομαι (vrískome) meaning "to be located" or the verb είμαι (íme) meaning "to be." |
| John: After this, comes a complement that will contain the person or thing we are asking about. That person or thing is the verb's subject and will usually be a noun phrase in the nominative case. The verb will always need to agree in person and number with its subject. Just keep in mind that the complement in the end of this pattern may contain other elements besides the subject but we are not going to go into details about this at the moment. |

| John: So remember, to ask about location or position, begin with the interrogative adverb |
| Chrissi: πού (pú)... |
| John: meaning "where." Then use the verb |
| Chrissi: βρίσκομαι (vrískome), "to be located," or είμαι (íme), "to be." |
| John: Finish with a complement that will contain the person or thing you are asking about. |
| John: Here is another example meaning, "Where is the ID?" First, we have the interrogative adverb meaning "where". |

| John: Second, we have the verb "to be" in the 3rd person singular meaning "is". |
| Chrissi: είναι (íne). |
| John: Third, we have the feminine noun phrase in the nominative meaning "the ID" here. |
