Hey Hey! Stefania here with another video for you. Our topic for this video is 10 Reasons to Learn Greek. So let's see them one by one!
(Íne mia ómorfi glósa!) "It's a beautiful language!"
(Ta eliniká íne mia ómorfi glósa!)
"Greek is a beautiful language!"
Do you agree? I think so. Maybe because it's my language. But I think Greek doesn't sound bad, I mean we don't have any harsh sounding consonants and the Greek vocabulary is so rich that sometimes I really can't express some concepts in other languages exactly. For some words, we have many synonyms that we can use to make our speech more poetic or sentimental or colloquial or slang-ish, so I really feel Greek helps me express myself in so many different ways.
2 κάνω chat με 'Ελληνες φίλους μου (káno 'chat' me 'Elines fílus mu) "to chat with Greek friends"
(Káthe Savatokíriako káno 'chat' me 'Elines fílus mu.)
"Every weekend, I chat with Greek friends of mine."
I know many of you are learning Greek just to be able to speak to your Greek friends, which is awesome!
3 κάνω μεταφράσεις (káno metafrásis) "to do translations"
"She does translations to cover her expenses."
Why not? You can learn Greek and then make money by doing translations! You can never go hungry if you're bilingual!
4 παρακολουθώ ταινίες χωρίς υπότιτλους (parakoluthó teníes horís ipótitlus) "to watch movies without subtitles"
(Den mu arési na parakoluthó teníes horís ipótitlus.)
"I don't like to watch movies without subtitles."
I think it's difficult to find Greek movies with subtitles, so... you would have to watch them without subtitles anyway!
5 ζω στην Ελλάδα (zo stin Eláda)"to live in Greece"
(Ézisa stin Eláda ya éxi hrónia.)
"I lived in Greece for six years."
That's THE most important reason to learn Greek! If you live in Greece, you'll need to speak the language to really experience life there and to understand the culture, the humor and everything that goes on in the Greek society.
6 έχω πιο ευχάριστες διακοπές στην Ελλάδα (ého pio efháristes diakopés stin Eláda) "to have more enjoyable vacations in Greece"
(Mu arési na káno diakopés sti hóra mu, ómos ého pio efháristes diakopés stin Eláda.)
"I like to do vacations in my country, but I have more enjoyable vacations in Greece."
Speaking Greek will definitely be a plus in your vacations, although I think you'll enjoy your vacation in Greece just as much whether you speak Greek or not.
7 καταλαβαίνω τους στίχους των τραγουδιών (katalavéno tus stíhus ton tragudión) "to understand song lyrics"
(Den katalavéno pánda tus stíhus ton tragudión.)
"I don't always understand the song lyrics."
That happens to me with English-speaking songs when they're fast. I keep mishearing the lyrics. Understanding lyrics in a different language is not easy!
8 κάνω νέους φίλους (káno néus fílus) "to make new friends"
(Káthe forá pu taxidévo mu arési na káno kenúrius fílus.)
"Every time I travel, I like to make new friends."
If you speak Greek you'll make even more friends whenever you travel to Greece! So there's another reason for you to speak Greek!
9 μπορώ να μιλάω με Έλληνες συγγενείς στο τηλέφωνο (boró na miláo me Élines singenís sto tiléfono) "to be able to speak with Greek relatives on the phone"
(An den máthis eliniká, den tha borís na milás me Élines singenís sto tiléfono.)
"If you don't learn Greek, you won't be able to speak with Greek relatives on the phone."
Do you still use the phone to talk to your Greek relatives? I think nowadays everyone makes video calls which in Greek is called βιντεοκλήση.
10 δραστηριοποιούμαι στον χώρο των ελληνικών επιχειρήσεων (drastiriopiúme ston hóro ton elinikón epihiríseon) "to do business with Greek companies"
(To afendikó mu drastiriopiíte ston hóro ton elinikón epihiríseon.)
"My boss does business with Greek companies."
If you are thinking of doing business in Greece, then yes, you have a reason to learn Greek!
This is the end of this video. Those were 10 Reasons to Learn Greek. Can you think of some more? Write a comment! See you in the next video! (Ya hará!)
