Judith: Judith here. Absolute Beginner, Season 1, Lesson 25. A Postcard from Greece. Welcome, everyone. This is the last lesson of our Absolute Beginner Series, Season 1.
Iro: You’ve learned a lot.
Judith: You’ve learned so much you’re probably ready to move on.
Iro: The next step is the Upper Beginner Series.
Judith: There, you will learn the past tense, the non-continuous future, and other important topics of Greek grammar.
Iro: You will also continue to improve your vocabulary, of course.
Judith: But before you move on, we have one more lesson for you.
Iro: What are we learning today?
Judith: In this lesson, you will learn how to write a postcard in Greek.
Iro: This conversation takes place at Petros’ and Ellie’s home.
Judith: The conversation is between Petros and Ellie.
Iro: The speakers are a couple; therefore, they will be speaking informal Greek.

Πέτρος:Σπίτι μου, σπιτάκι μου!
Έλλη:Μια κάρτα από την Αντρέα!
Πέτρος:Τι γράφει;
Έλλη:Αγαπημένοι μου Έλλη και Πέτρο, είμαι στη Σαμοθράκη με τη φίλη μου και περνάμε υπέροχα!
Έλλη:Οι άνθρωποι μας μιλάνε ελληνικά και μας δίνουν φρούτα και φαγητά και μας δείχνουν τα αρχαία.
Έλλη:Εδώ δεν είναι σαν την Αθήνα, η θάλασσα είναι ωραία, η φύση είναι υπέροχη και έχει ησυχία.
Έλλη:Μου λείπετε όμως πολύ. Μου στέλνετε τις φωτογραφίες μας όταν μπορείτε;
Έλλη:Να είστε καλά, Αντρέα.
Πέτρος:Ωραία. Πεινάω. Δε μαγειρεύουμε κάτι;
Έλλη:Δεν υπάρχει τίποτα. Ωχ το τηλέφωνό μου. Έλα μαμά, ναι καλά. Ε, πεινάμε λίγο.
Μαμά:Ελάτε εδώ παιδί μου. Έχω κεφτεδάκια. Σας αρέσουν;
Έλλη:Ναι, μας αρέσουν πολύ.
Μαμά:Εντάξει, σας περιμένουμε.
Έλλη:Η μαμά μου έχει κεφτεδάκια.
Πέτρος:Τέλεια, πάμε.
Έλλη:Περίμενε, θέλω τις φωτογραφίες. Της αρέσουν πολύ οι φωτογραφίες. Και έχω και το κομπολόι για τον πατέρα σου. Θα του αρέσει;
Πέτρος:Θα τους αρέσουν και οι φωτογραφίες και το κομπολόι. Πάμε, πεινάω!

Judith:My dear Elli and Peter, I'm in Samothrace with my friend, and we're having a great time!
Έλλη:Οι άνθρωποι μας μιλάνε ελληνικά και μας δίνουν φρούτα και φαγητά και μας δείχνουν τα αρχαία.
Judith:People speak Greek to us and give us fruits and food and show us the ruins.
Έλλη:Εδώ δεν είναι σαν την Αθήνα, η θάλασσα είναι ωραία, η φύση είναι υπέροχη και έχει ησυχία.
Judith:It's not like Athens here, the sea is beautiful, the nature is wonderful, and it's calm.
Έλλη:Μου λείπετε όμως πολύ. Μου στέλνετε τις φωτογραφίες μας όταν μπορείτε;
Judith:I miss you guys a lot though. Will you send me the photos when you can?
Έλλη:Να είστε καλά, Αντρέα.

Judith:Nice. I'm hungry. Can't we cook something?

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Judith: Okay, so what is this Samothrace place? I don’t think I’ve heard about this before.
Iro: Samothrace is in Northeastern Greece. It is known for the statue of Nike. Nike of Samothrace which is exhibited at the Louvre.
Judith: I heard it’s an island with beautiful nature, rich flora and fauna, steep mountains, lakes, waterfalls, and forests. The trees are said to reach all the way to the beaches.
Iro: The island’s natural beauty has been preserved because the island is not a touristic hotspot. So, it does not attract as many tourists as the more popular islands like Santorini and Mykonos.
Judith: In the ancient years, it was a place of religious interest. Nowadays, the exact nature of the rituals that were held there remains unknown. The island is rich in archaeological findings that date back to the Neolithic Era. There are also ruins of temples and sanctuaries of the ancient city. And there are ruins that date back to the Byzantine years.
Iro: On Samothrace, you can do water sports, scuba diving, canoeing, kayaking, as well as mountain biking. You can go to spas, visit religious sites and archaeological sites.
Judith: The island is said to have 999 churches. Can you believe that?
Iro: Yeah.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Judith: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Iro: The first word we’ll look at is Σπιτάκι “little house.” "Σπίτι μου, σπιτάκι μου!" is an expression similar to “home sweet home.”
Judith: Next, Αγαπημένοι μου … is “dear” like a start of a letter. αγαπημένοι is derived from αγαπάω. Αγαπάω means “to love” and αγαπημένοι means “loved ones.”
Iro: "Περνάμε υπέροχα" “We’re having a great time.”
Judith: τα αρχαία literally “the old things” means “the ruins.”
Iro: The Greek ending -ia is much like the English “-ness” or “-ty.” It turns adjectives into nouns. For example, ήσυχος
Judith: Quiet.
Iro: ησυχία
Judith: Quietness.
Iro: άρρωστος
Judith: Sick.
Iro: αρρωστία
Judith: Sickness.
Iro: δύσκολος
Judith: Difficult.

Lesson focus

Judith: The focus of this lesson is genitive weak personal pronouns.
Iro: In lesson 18, we learned the accusative personal pronouns. Now it’s time to look at the other type of object pronouns.
Judith: Greek calls these genitive pronouns, but really, they’re indirect pronouns used when English would say “to me,” “to you,” “to us” or the like, and also sometimes when English wouldn’t say so because this kind of thing never translates well.
Iro: Essentially, there is no rule when you should use accusative personal pronouns or genitive personal pronouns. It just goes with the verb. If you see a verb often enough, it will become natural to you.
Judith: On the bright side, the genitive personal pronouns will be very easy to master. They are just the same as the possessive pronouns, that is the Greek words for “my,” “your,” “her,” “his,” “our” and so on. Let’s go over them once anyway.
