| Judith: Okay. Now maybe this is the time to talk about various events that you could be seeing in Greece. |
| Iro: There are many cultural events during the summer. Festivals, concerts, exhibitions and performances are held frequently throughout the country. |
| Judith: The Herodion and the theatre of Epidaurus have hosted remarkable artists from all over the world. If you want to watch a classic Greek tragedy, Epidaurus is probably the best place in the world to do so. |
| Iro: Greece also has many amphitheatres where you can watch a play or see a concert out in the nature, under the stars and far from the noise of the city. If you ever have the chance to go to an open-air theatre, be sure not to pass it up. It’s really worth it. |
| Judith: Some musicians give performances in ruins of old castles, mostly on the islands. The only problem with being outside are usually the mosquitoes or the weather and the uncomfortable seats. Therefore, it is something that you can only do during the summer time. But it will be a really nice experience. |

| KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES |
| Judith: Let’s have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrase from this lesson. |
| Iro: The first phrase we’ll look at is "Μισό λεπτό". |
| Judith: Half a minute. |
| Iro: It’s an expression, meaning the same as “give me a minute” or “just a moment.” As in English, the amount of time is not to be taken seriously. |
| Judith: "Λεπτάκι" is the diminutive form of "λεπτό" “minute.” So it’s literally, “little minute.” Diminutive means that something is smaller and in Greek, the ending -ακι is often used for this. Can you give us another example maybe, Judith? |
| Iro: "σκυλί" is a “dog” and "σκυλάκι" is a “little dog” or “puppy.” |
| Judith: The last thing I wanted to draw your attention to is "Ρε". It means “hey” or “eh,” it has not real English equivalent, but it’s often used to grab someone’s attention. And to emphasize the fact that you’re talking to them. |
| Iro: It can also be pronounced as “βρε.” |
Lesson focus |
| Judith: Okay. The focus of this lesson is mediopassive verbs. It’s time to cover another group of verbs which is unavoidable when talking about getting ready. These verbs are called mediopassive verbs. You’ve probably heard of active and passive relating to verbs. In a nutshell, active is when you’re doing something and passive is when something is done to you. |
| Iro: Mediopassive is for when you’re both the person doing and receiving the action, when you’re doing something to yourself. In some languages like Spanish and French, these verbs are called reflexive. |
| Judith: Let’s take washing as an example. The sentence “I wash the car” is active. The sentence, “the car is being washed” is passive. You don’t even know who’s doing it. The sentence “I wash myself” is mediopassive by Greek standards. |
| Iro: This explains why so many Greek verbs from getting up, getting dressed, to shaving, to putting on makeup are all mediopassive because they’re all about things that you do it to yourself. |
| Judith: In Greek, there are no pronouns like, “myself”, “yourself”, “himself”, “ourselves” or the like. Instead, the verbs get a special set of endings. Let’s take ντύνομαι as an example ντύνομαι means, “to get dressed.” |
| Iro: ντύν-ομαι |
| Judith: I get dressed. |
| Iro: ντύν-εσαι |
| Judith: You get dressed. |
| Iro: ντύν-εται |
| Judith: He gets dressed. |
| Iro: ντυν-όμαστε |
| Judith: We get dressed. |
| Iro: ντύν-εστε |
| Judith: You all get dressed. |
| Iro: ντύν-ονται |
| Judith: “They get dressed.” This pattern is really important, not just for the word field of personal hygiene, also words like "έρχομαι", “to come” and "χρειάζομαι", “to need,” follow this pattern for no apparent reason. Maybe, can you conjugate "έρχομαι" for us, “to come”? |
| Iro: Έρχομαι, έρχεσαι, έρχεται, ερχόμαστε, έρχεστε, έρχονται. |
